On the edge of the world’s end, between the audience and the stage, a character crosses a boundary. With him, we make several encounters, and cross several no-​man’s lands between thought and action, mind and body, music and theatre. Study for life, Kaija Saariaho’s first music theatre piece, based on T.S. Eliot’s poem The Hollow Men, is performed here for the first time since its premiere in 1981, combined with the new version with text of her violin concerto Graal Théâtre. In the interstice between these two works, that outline a form of fragmentary opera, are new works by promising young composers of Saariaho’s age when creating Study for life.

Between has no center. Like the musical harmony born of the superimposition of differences, the performance is a series of encounters, intervals and divergences. In an age obsessed with unity and identity, it never speaks with a single voice.
